Prada announced on Tuesday that it has successfully acquired Versace, bringing together two iconic Italian luxury fashion houses. The $1.38 billion (£1.04 billion) deal is significantly lower than the $2 billion that Capri Holdings, Versace’s previous parent company, paid for the brand in 2018.
The acquisition allows Prada to expand its portfolio, which already includes Miu Miu, as it strives to compete with other major players in the luxury fashion industry, such as LVMH, which owns prominent brands like Dior, Fendi, and Louis Vuitton.
Donatella Versace Steps Down
Versace’s longtime creative director, Donatella Versace, who had been with the company for 27 years, stepped down from her position earlier this year in March. She had taken over the brand in 1997 after the tragic murder of her brother Gianni Versace. Under her leadership, Versace became known for its bold and glamorous designs, including the iconic Medusa head logo.
Following her departure, Dario Vitale, formerly a design director at Miu Miu, Prada’s youthful luxury brand, was appointed as the new creative lead.
A $700 Million Loss for Capri Holdings
The acquisition price reflects a $700 million loss for Capri Holdings, which has struggled with slow sales at Versace in recent years. This follows a decline in sales across other brands owned by Capri, including Michael Kors and Jimmy Choo. Under Capri’s ownership, Versace transitioned from its signature ornate designs to a more minimalist aesthetic while raising prices.
Proceeds Used to Reduce Debt
The proceeds from the sale will help Capri Holdings reduce its debt. John D. Idol, the CEO of Capri, stated that the company plans to use the funds to repay the majority of its debt, thereby strengthening its balance sheet.
Prada’s View on the Acquisition
Andrea Guerra, CEO of Prada, has expressed confidence in the acquisition, noting that Versace holds immense potential. He acknowledged that the process would take time and require disciplined execution and patience but believed it was a strategic move for the company’s growth.
Prada’s successful acquisition of Versace marks a significant moment in the luxury fashion sector, potentially reshaping the competitive landscape as it seeks to challenge its high-end rivals.
